US women’s soccer team eliminated in Olympics shocker

The United States women’s soccer team lost to Sweden in the quarterfinals of the Olympics tournament on Friday.
The US lost, 4-3, on penalty kicks after overtime ended with the teams tied 1-1.

Lisa Dahlkvist converted Sweden’s final penalty past US goalie Hope Solo after Alex Morgan and Christen Press missed for the reigning gold medalists and World Cup champions.
It is the first time the Americans failed to reach at least the semifinals of a major tournament. The US had played in the final every year since women’s soccer became an Olympic sport in 1996, winning gold four times.
After a scoreless first half, Stina Blackstenius scored in the 61st minute to give Sweden a 1-0 lead. Morgan scored the equalizer in the 78th minute.
In a madcap sequence during overtime, Carli Lloyd was called offside on what appeared to be a goal on a header in the 115th minute, and a minute later, Lotta Schelin was offside on her attempt against Solo — though replay appeared to show otherwise.
