A homeless man, Usman Garuba, 30, on Monday in Lagos pleaded guilty to stealing 2,300 pieces of rechargeable lamps valued at N1.8m. Garuba, who appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, agreed that he was guilty of the count of theft preferred against him.
The Magistrate, Mr Ade Adefulire ordered that the accused should be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to Sept. 14 for the presentation of the facts. The prosecuting officer, Mr Ben Ekundayo told the court that the accused had on Aug. 7 at about 6:45p.m. at Dosumu St., Lagos Island, stole 2,300 rechargeable lamps.
He said the accused, who slept at an open passage near the store where the lamps were kept, used a stick with nails attached to its head to pull out cartons of the lamps through a window.
He alleged that the accused had earlier stolen some of the lamps from Chukwudi Ifediba’s store unnoticed, but was finally caught in possession of a sack full of the lamps before the action was brought against him.
He said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2011.
