Gambia Supreme Court judge declines to rule on president's election challenge

The top judge in Gambia's Supreme Court declined on Monday to rule on President Yahya Jammeh's petition to overturn his election defeat, as many Gambians wait nervously to see how the veteran leader will react to his rival's planned inauguration this week.

Jammeh initially conceded defeat to opposition leader Adama Barrow following the Dec. 1 poll but later changed his mind, drawing widespread condemnation and the threat of a military intervention by regional neighbours.

Whether Gambia succeeds in swearing in Barrow is viewed as a test for democracy in West Africa, a region which is seeking to draw a line under a history of coups and autocratic rule.

Dr Babagoni Shettima, a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri, was injured in the suicide bombing that occurred at the University of Maiduguri in the early hours of Monday, January 16th. He is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. 

Sadly, he lost one of his sons in the blast. He was laid to rest yesterday in Gwange, Borno State.

Court adjourns trial of Senator Ndume, charged over alleged sponsoring of Boko Haram sect

Justice Gabriel Kolawole of The Federal High Court, Abuja, adjourned hearing in Sen. Ali Ndume trial till Feb. 2.

Ndume was arraigned before Abuja High Court in 2011, along with Ali Sanda-Konduga, on a four-count charge for allegedly sponsoring of Boko Haram Islamist sect.

Konduga, a self-confessed spokesman of the terror group had accused the Borno senator of sponsoring him to undertake Boko Haram activities. Ndume had pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him, while Konduga who did plead guilty was convicted under SECTION 398 of the penal code.

In his ruling on Monday, January 16th, Justice Kolawole ordered the prosecution to pay cost for filing an application out of time.

17-year-old boy allegedly hacked his entire family to death as they lay in their beds

Alexander K, a 17-year-old school boy, is being held as a suspect in the death of his entire family after they were all found hacked to death in their beds at home in Tambov, Russia.

Alexander had reportedly suffered from depression after his mother died of cancer three years ago. 

He is also believed to have withdrawn from his family and friends and joined a sect. To add to all these, he did not get along with his father and his father's new girlfriend, but the friction between him and his family is believed to have come to a crux after his family refused to lend him 200,000 RUB (£2,788).

Show promoter, Supo Dosunmu who gave D'banj and Don Jazzy their big break in the United States has died

Supo Dosunmu a popular US show promoter, CEO of Unique promotions and son of late Senator Wahab Dosunmu is dead. Supo died on Monday, January 16, 2017 in the United States.

Before his death, Supo (in black) was quite popular in the Nigerian Music Scene and he was a respected and popular show promoter in United States who took Dbanj and Don Jazzy on their first major tour US several years back.
