Former FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed arrested by EFCC over N1trn Abuja land swap

The immediate past minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Bala Mohammed, was reportedly arrested by EFCC today October 24th. According to Vanguard, he was arrested over suspected multiple criminal breaches, questionable schemes and alleged breaches while in office. His arrest followed a series of petitions filed against him by individuals and group since 2013.

When Chief Femi Fani-Kayode was rearrested on Friday, 21^st of October, 2016, in the premises of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, we raised a number of issues which included that the re-arrest was not only unnecessary but that it was also reckless.

We made known our fears that Fani-Kayode’s life was in dire danger as long as he remained in EFCC custody or in the custody of any agency of the federal government based on discreet information available to us. This is apart from the fact that his health has been badly affected since his incarceration for a whopping 67 days based on some questionable ‘detention orders’. This fact is well known to the EFCC as Fani-Kayode’s lawyers have written several letters to the Commission reminding them of the health conditions of the former minister of aviation (Kindly see attached).

Dangote Denies Sacking Workers Due To Recession

The Dangote Group of Companies has denied reports that the disengagement of 48 workers from the company was due to economic recession in the country.

Mr Tony Chiejina, its Head of Corporate Affairs, disclosed in Lagos on Monday that the 36 expatriates workers formed the bulk of those disengaged.

He said that the expatriates were disengaged because of job overlap, while the 12 Nigerians that were affected were in the procurement department whose services were now redundant due to growth in the company.

Chiejina said that Dangote group was rather expanding its operations in spite of the recession and this expansion would fire more employments in the company.

Presidency Insists Judges Must Step Down For Trial

The Presidency is insisting that two Supreme Court Justices and four others must step aside ahead of their trial for alleged corruption, The Nation learnt last night.

It also faulted Chief Justice Mahmud Mohammed’s claim that the Judiciary had issues with the Department of State Services (DSS), not the Federal Government.

It was also learnt that the DSS refused to release the evidence against the judges under probe to the National Judicial Council (NJC) in order not to prejudice their trial.

Those under investigation by the DSS are two Supreme Court Justices -Justice Sylvester Ngwuta and Justice Inyang Okoro; the suspended Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division, Justice Mohammed Ladan Tsamiya, who was picked up in Sokoto; Justice Adeniyi Ademola (Federal High Court); the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice I. A. Umezulike;  Justice Kabiru Auta of Kano State High Court;  Justice Muazu Pindiga (Gombe State High Court);  Justice Bashir Sukola and  Justice Ladan Manir, from the Kaduna State High Court.

Dangote Sacks 36 Expatriates, 12 Nigerians Due To Recession

The current recession rocking the Nigerian economy has hit one of the biggest employers of labour in the country outside of the government as the Dangote Group, belonging to Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has fired 48 members of staff.

It was gathered that those sacked were made up of 36 expatriate and 12 Nigerian workers from the group’s headquarters and one of the subsidiaries, Dangote Cement Plc.

Though no official of the group was willing to speak on the matter on Sunday, one of Punch correspondents gathered from highly placed sources that the decision to sack the workers was not unconnected with the current high cost of running business in the country occasioned by the unavailability of foreign exchange and the unprecedented hike in the naira to dollar exchange rate.
